klondike river

Countless creeks and rivers feed into the Klondike river. These tributaries have allowed gold rush miners to explore the Territory since 1896. Today there is a strong community of placer miners who operate responsible mining operations in the area. Most operations are family owned and operated, some with direct ties to the first miners in the Yukon.

Principles and Standards

The principles and standards of our Ethical Gold Certification are built on values that reflect a strong commitment to promoting sustainable development through the prudent use of Yukon’s resources. The principles and standards underpinning our ethical gold certification encapsulate leading edge practices in ecological and social sustainability. They reflect the work of numerous industry representatives, non government organization, and community groups committed to the development of responsible mining practices.

In particular, the “Golden Rules” identified by the “No Dirty Gold” campaign have provided the guide for the development of the Mammoth Tusk Gold ethical gold framework. We recognize that the Golden Rules were developed primarily for hard rock mining. However, the rules are anchored in universally acknowledged human rights laws and sustainable development principles and as such have provided valuable guidance in the establishing of our principles and standards.

The Mammoth Tusk Gold certification principles and standards have been developed within the context of Yukon’s placer mining regulatory regime. They are comprehensive with clear and measurable social and environmental thresholds.
